New Utica Well Permits Dwindles Down to 2
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Two horizontal well permits were awarded to energy companies during the week ended July 2, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The latest numbers reflect the continued slowdown in drilling across the Utica and other shale plays as energy companies wrestle with low commodity prices. The rig count for the week stood at 11, up from nine recorded the previous week.
ODNR issued permits to XTO Energy, a subsidiary of Exxon-Mobil, for a well in Belmont County, and to Antero Resources Corp. for a well planned for Noble County.
Since 2010, 2,187 horizontal well permits have been issued in the Utica and 1,755 wells are now drilled. Of that number, 1,334 wells are in production.
