Valley Unemployment Rates in June Down from Last Year

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local unemployment rates rose month-over-month in June but declined nearly a full percentage point or more from a year earlier.

Unemployment rates last month in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties were just under 4.5%, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday morning. Both Mahoning and Columbiana counties posted 4.3% unemployment rates in June, with unemployment in Trumbull County slightly higher at 4.4%.

Unemployment rates in all three counties were higher than the month before by half a point or less. The May unemployment was 3.8% in Columbiana County, 4% in Mahoning County and 4.1% in Trumbull County. In June 2022, unemployment was 5.3% in Trumbull County, 5.2% in Mahoning County and 5% in Columbiana County.

Unemployment rates in the Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities in June similarly were up from the month before and down from a year earlier, as was the rate in the metropolitan statistical area that includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Youngstown reported a 5.5% unemployment rate in June, up half a point from May’s 5% and down from 7% in June 2022. Warren’s rate was 5.6%, also up half a point from 5.1% the month before and down from 6.4% in June 2022.

In the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA MSA, which includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, unemployment ras at 4.3% in June, up from 4% in May and down from 5.3% in June 2022.
