Ohio Unemployment Slips to 5% During June

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio’s unemployment rate in June dropped to 5.0%, down from 5.1% in May, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported this morning. Unemployment last month was up from June 2015’s 4.8%.

Nationwide the employment rate was 4.9% in June, up from 4.7% in May and down from 5.3% in June 2015.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio declined 9,000 over the month, from 300,000 in May to 291,000 last month. Over the past year, the number of unemployed has increased by 17,000 from 274,000 in June 2015.

Nonagricultural wage and salary employment in the state increased 12,400 over the month, from a revised 5,484,600 in May to 5,497,000 in June, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Goods-producing industries, at 905,500 jobs, added 4,000 over last month. Job gains in manufacturing (+2,600) and construction (+1,700) surpassed losses in mining and logging (-300).

Nonagricultural wage and salary employment in Ohio grew 81,600 over the last 18 months. Employment in goods-producing industries increased 6,200. Construction added 9,900 jobs over the year. Mining and logging lost 3,000 jobs.

Manufacturing employment decreased 700 as losses in durable goods (-7,500) outweighed gains in nondurable goods (+6,800).
