Controlling Board OKs $1.2M for Work at Ohio State Penitentiary

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Controlling Board approved $1.2 million for the Ohio State Penitentiary for construction services on a new water treatment system. 

The funding is in addition to the $116,000 allocated in May for design services. 

The construction services for the OSP’s Water Softener Project will consist of at least the replacement of existing piping; the removal of a nonfunctioning domestic pump system based on system requirements and location needs; and the incorporation of all system controls and/or alarms into the current Johnson Controls network. 

The new water treatment system in the high-security, six-story correction facility at 878 Coitsville-Hubbard Road, operated by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, will be capable of softening the water for the entire main facility, a news release states.

“It is good to see this project moving along,” state Rep. Lauren McNally of Youngstown, D-59th, said in announcing the funding approval. “Our state inmates are our responsibility, and our goal must always be rehabilitation. Their care while under our care matters.”

The $1.2 million in capital funds from the General Building Renovation line item in fiscal year 2024 will be awarded to Prout Boiler Heating & Welding Inc. of Youngstown.
