ODNR Issues Just One Permit for Northern Utica
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 20 new permits for horizontal wells to explore for oil and gas in the Utica shale last week, the agency reports.
Chesapeake Exploration LLC, a division of Chesapeake Energy Corp., received one permit for a new well in Columbiana County. The company plans to spud a well at the Paige property in Franklin Township.
No permits were issued for either Trumbull or Mahoning counties, according to the latest update.
American Energy Utica LLC was awarded five permits to drill in Belmont County; Hess Ohio Developments LLC received five permits for wells in Harrison County; CNX Gas secured four permits in Noble County; and Antero Resources Corp. was awarded four permits to drill in Monroe County.
XTO Energy, a division of Exxon Mobil, received a permit for a well in Belmont County.
ODNR has issued 1,852 horizontal well permits for eastern Ohio’s Utica since exploration began in 2010. Of that number, 1,386 wells have been drilled and 821 are in production.
No new well permits were issued in Lawrence or Mercer counties in the western Pennsylvania portion of the Utica shale last week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
