Grads of All Youngstown High Schools Invited to Throwback Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Schools-United Throwback event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at South High School, 1833 Market St.

Graduates of all public and private Youngstown high schools are invited to enjoy a picnic lunch, live music, family-friendly activities, a vintage car show and a tour of the revitalization progress at the South High facility.

The event is sponsored by Youngstown Jubilee Urban Development, an organization dedicated to revitalizing Youngstown.

The Youngstown City Series, which lasted from 1925 to 2007, included six city high schools and two city parochial schools. In the glory days, South and Rayen high schools’ massive football stadiums were packed with crowds of up to 20,000 for Friday night crosstown football rivalries.

“We’re calling all Warriors, Bulldogs, Golden Bears, Cowboys, Tigers, Presidents/Redmen, Cardinals and Fighting Irish to come out and represent your rich history and relive that special time in Youngstown,” throwback event organizer Jon Howell said. “While we celebrate the past, we’ll also be casting our vision forward to the future.”

Youngstown Jubilee’s vision for its South High Revitalization Project is to see the landmark restored as a vital center of education and community life.

“We look forward to broad community partnerships and reopening South High’s doors to welcome the community to a new era of vibrant programs and activities in these hallowed halls and stately grounds,” said Eric Holm, executive director Youngstown Jubilee Urban Development.

The event will include alumni speakers recalling powerhouse all-city basketball and football teams and cherished memories. Music will feature local throwback bands, and a vintage car show will showcase classic cars. A picnic lunch will be served. Everything is free.

“We hope to see South High’s front lawns filled once again in festive, joyful celebration,” Howell said. “Come remember the past and help usher in the future.”
