UPMC Horizon – Shenango Valley Expands with $1.5M Project
FARRELL, Pa. – A $1.5 million expansion of the emergency department at UPMC Horizon – Shenango Valley opened this week in response to a greater need for care in the community.
The project, in response to a 15% increase in patient volume, created 1,300 square feet of space for the emergency department, allowing five additional beds to be added to the previous 16.
“When demand for UPMC services increases, we prioritize and we respond to the needs of our community,” said Dr. Beth Piccione president of UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson. “People arrive at our hospitals in all forms of medical distress, and our skilled physicians and staff possess the knowledge and resources to provide the highest level of care for their needs.”
This latest expansion follows a $4.5 million emergency department expansion in 2018 that added 7,000 square feet and seven beds. Yet need continues to increase. In 2023, UPMC Horizon – Shenango Valley cared for about 21,000 patients, which was a 13% increase from 2022.
So far in 2024, there has been a 20% increase in EMS arrivals at the emergency department, according to Piccione, who sees the expansion as a way to see and treat many patients faster and transition those requiring longer-term care plans sooner.
“This expansion will streamline care, reduce wait times and best support staff with the space and capacity to deliver high-quality care and experiences – to do what we do best,” said Dr. Peter Adler, chief of emergency medicine services at UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson. “People in our community are increasingly choosing UPMC for their unscheduled and emergency care, and we embrace that challenge and opportunity to aid, heal and serve.”
