The Update | ‘On the Verge’ at YSU Theatre; Silent Film at Stambaugh; Etheridge Coming to Packard

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University Theatre will open its 2024-25 season with “On the Verge.”

Originally written by Eric Overmyer, the time-traveling comedy will take place at Ford Theater in Bliss Hall, located on YSU’s campus, beginning Friday, Oct. 4.

Directed by Todd Dicken, “On the Verge” follows the whimsical journey of three intrepid Victorian explorers as they traverse uncharted lands and dimensions, encountering eccentric characters and grappling with the mysteries of time and progress. The play offers a blend of humor, history and speculative fiction, inviting audiences to reflect on human curiosity and the ever-changing world.

Cast members include Emalee Chappa, Chloe Downey, Mallory Ehrhart and Sam Law.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4-5 and 11-12; and 2 p.m. Oct. 6 and 13.

Melissa Etheridge, Joss Stone Coming to Packard

WARREN, Ohio – The Melissa Etheridge and Joss Stone co-headlining tour will come to Packard Music Hall on April 21, 2025.

Tickets range from $119.50 to $49.50 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Ticketmaster.com (fees apply).

Etheridge is known for her hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window.”

Earlier this year, she released “I’m Not Broken,” a two-part docuseries on Paramount+, and an accompanying double live album. The docuseries and live album follow Etheridge’s journey to write and perform a song inspired by her correspondence with inmates of the Topeka Correctional Center, a prison in Kansas.

Silent Film with Live Pipe Organ Accompaniment

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Stambaugh Auditorium will present the silent film “The Lost World” with live pipe organ accompaniment by Jay Spencer at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. Spencer regularly accompanies silent film screenings on the pipe organ at the Canton Palace Theatre.

Tickets are $11 (plus fees) and available at StambaughAuditorium.com. All seating is general admission.

“The Lost World” is a “creature feature” released in 1925, based on the 1912 novel by Arthur Conan Doyle. It stars Wallace Beery, Lloyd Hughes, Lewis Stone, Arthur Hoyt and Bessie Love.

It is the first live-action dinosaur adventure and also the first film to display scenes combining stop-motion model animation effects with flesh-and-blood actors. It introduced cinema’s first special effects celebrity, Willis H. O’Brien – a pioneer of visual techniques still in use today.

Film Fest at Westminster Seeks Submissions

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Westminster College invites all creative storytellers to share their talents with the Titan Film Festival: The Thriller Edition competition. 

Community filmmakers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to submit their mini movies in the contest.

With categories for novice, advanced and audience choice, community members can be experienced or beginning filmmakers, but they must all include specific elements to be eligible.

Films must:

  • Be five minutes or less.
  • Fit within the genre of supernatural, aliens, eco-thriller, monsters, zombies, general science fiction or cloak-and-dagger.
  • Include an ice cream cone prop as a scene element or used in the background.
  • Be family-friendly films and appropriate for all ages.
  • Be submitted via YouTube or a similar platform.

Entries are due by Monday, Oct. 14, and winners will be announced at a showcase event at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, in Mueller Theater of McKelvey Campus Center on Westminster’s campus. The showcase will present several awards, including the fan favorite award determined by audience vote.
