The Update | Cockeye Creamery Wins Awards; Grand Kyiv Ballet to Return
WARREN, Ohio – Cockeye Creamery won two awards in the annual competition of the North American Ice Cream Association: a red ribbon for its Deep Chocolate and a white ribbon for its French Vanilla Bean.
Hundreds of ice cream professionals and aspiring dessert entrepreneurs from across the nation competed in the annual event, which took place in Savannah, Ga., Nov. 12-15.
A highlight of the event is the association’s ice cream flavor and quality competitions. The judging process was overseen by dairy scientist Sam Alcaine of Cornell University. Judging panels included veteran ice cream business owners.
Cockeye Creamery is part of the Edgar Joseph Group of restaurant companies, which is owned by the Hoover family of Warren and also includes Cockeye BBQ and Franky’s Pizza, both in Warren. The creamery, on Chestnut Avenue NE, is run by Maxwell Hoover.
Grand Kyiv Ballet to Perform ‘Swan Lake’ at Powers
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Grand Kyiv Ballet will return to Powers Auditorium on April 18 to perform “Swan Lake” at 7 p.m.
The troupe from the war-town country last performed at Powers in March.
“Swan Lake” has been a mainstay of the ballet repertoire for a century. Based on a German legend, it tells about the beautiful princess Odette, who has been enchanted into a swan by a sorcerer. The ballet is set to the music of Tchaikovsky and is built on the struggle of light and darkness, Odette and Odile.

Historic Christmas House Tour in Wellsville
WELLSVILLE, Ohio – The Wellsville Community Foundation’s third annual Historic Christmas House Tour will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8.
The tour includes six stops, including two homes and one business that are new this year. Guests can take the walking tour at their own pace.
Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at Wellsville Village Hall, Slacks Antique Mall, Wellsville Carnegie Library and the Ceramic Museum in East Liverpool.
Sharon will be Spruced Up for the Holidays
SHARON, Pa. – Downtown Sharon will be decked out with a beautiful new Christmas tree and updated décor throughout the area this holiday season.
The 30-foot tree will be erected in the new downtown green space along East State Street.
“We’ve been envisioning how best to utilize this space as a gathering spot for the community, and the addition of the tree is a perfect way to celebrate the season and bring people together,” said Bob Fiscus, city manager.
Enhancements have also been made to the snowflake light pole decorations along State Street.
The tree will be lit during the Night of Lights event from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30. The event will include live entertainment, children’s activities, s’mores, pyrotechnics and the arrival of Santa Claus. Performers will include the Brass Band of the Salvation Army, the Buhl Club Dancers and cast members of “It’s a Rat Pack Christmas” at ACTS.
In addition, the new Merry Makers Avenue will transform Shenango Avenue into a pop-up family festival from 4 to 6 p.m., featuring interactive art, activities and fun for children. Local organizations will have booths set up along the avenue, and Mercer County Food Bank will have a collection site along Merry Makers Avenue to collect nonperishable food items.
Santa will surprise attendees with a unique way to illuminate the new tree with the help of Pyrotecnico fireworks.
Christmas Gathering at Yanni Custom Furniture
CANFIELD, Ohio – Yanni Custom Furniture & Design and E.J. Hannah, both in Creekside Plaza on U.S. Route 224, will present its annual Christmas Gathering from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4.
This year, the event will focus on giving back to the community, with a portion of all sales benefiting Dylan’s House, a nonprofit organization that supports families of individuals with disabilities.
The event will feature holiday shopping, food and local vendors, including Fine Tune Fitness, Blo Blow Dry Bar, 850 Blues, Chic Chateau, Seint by Barbie, ENVY Luxury Resale, Happy + Free Co. and Knitted Treasures.
Taylor Swift Tribute Concert Coming to Packard
WARREN, Ohio – Let’s Sing Taylor, a live music experience celebrating Taylor Swift, will come to Packard Music Hall on March 6.
Tickets range from $49.50 to $29.50 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Ticketmaster.com only. Tickets purchased by Dec. 11 will receive a $10 discount.
Free Jazz Concert at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University jazz ensemble will present a free jazz concert at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Nov. 25) in Ford Theater, inside Bliss Hall.
The ensemble will be joined by guest vocalist Elizabeth Jadue. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue Deck (M30) for a $5 fee payable in cash only.
Queen Nation will Return to Robins Theatre
WARREN, Ohio – Queen Nation, a tribute to the music of rock band Queen, will return to the Robins Theatre on Feb. 28 for an 8 p.m. concert.
Tickets range from $18 to $38 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at RobinsTheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St.
