Ohio Business Filings Up Slightly in February

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The number of new business entities filing start-up documents with the Ohio secretary of state’s office increased slightly in February, rising to 7,918 compared to 7,753 in February 2014.

For the first two months of 2015, the secretary of state’s office has assisted with a total of 15,423 new business filings. This is slightly lower than the same period last year in which there were 15,533 filings.

Still, Ohio has experienced record business growth over the past five years, Jon Husted, the secretary of state, said in a release from his office.

Growth in online business filings has been steady and available online services continue to be expanded through the Ohio Business Central service, he added.

In January, Husted urged lawmakers to pass legislation to cut fees associated with forming a new business in Ohio, which resulted in the introduction of bills in both houses of the legislature.

New business filings are classified as forms filed with the state that declare the formation of a business entity, including for-profit, nonprofit and professional corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships. Filing as a business in Ohio does not guarantee the company will begin operations, be profitable or create job, Husted noted.
