Permit Application Suggests GetGo Interest in City
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The parent company of GetGo Café + Market might be looking at North Side for a site, an application to the Ohio Division of Liquor Control indicates.
Tamarkin Co., doing business as GetGo, applied to the state for a C1 permit at intersection of Belmont Avenue and Gypsy Lane, according to a notification to the city issued last week. A C1 permit allows an establishment to sell beer in the original sealed container for takeout only.
According to the state agency’s website, applications for the C1 permit as well as a D6 permit – for Sunday sales of intoxicating liquor between the hours of 10 or 11 a.m. and midnight – are pending. The same site reports “no opening” for a C2 permit, which would allow the sale of wine and mixed beverages in sealed containers for carryout.
GetGo is a Giant Eagle convenience store chain that offers services that include self-service gasoline pumps, coffee and other beverages, a limited selection of grocery items, prepared foods and, at some locations, car washes.
There are about a dozen GetGos in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys, including three near or along U.S. Route 224 in Boardman and Canfield. A new Canfield store opened last fall.
A request for comment from Giant Eagle, the Pittsburgh-based chain that operates GetGo, elicited a one-sentence response.
“We are actively evaluating opportunities to expand the GetGo Café + Market experience in the Youngstown area, but at the present time, we have no confirmed plans to announce,” Dan Donovan, director of corporate communications, said in an email.
Giant Eagle has not had a presence within Youngstown city limits since the chain closed its store on Canfield Road in 2008.
The chain operates a GetGo in front of the Giant Eagle nearly 2½ miles north on Belmont Avenue.
Sharon Woodberry, city director of community planning and economic development, said neither Giant Eagle nor GetGo had notified her of any interest in the city and was unaware of anything beyond the license application.
