Youngstown VAM Plant Now In Production

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An $81.6 million pipe-threading plant owned by a subsidiary of Paris-based Vallourec is now into its second month of production, the company says.

VAM USA LLC announced that the new plant started production of its premium pipe connectors for commercial sale in early May.

The plant produces premium-threaded pipe from a renovated building at the Ohio Works Business Park, near Vallourec Star’s pipe manufacturing facility on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

“The Youngstown facility offers increased premium capacity in close proximity to the local shale plays, enhanced response timing, and the latest in finishing process technology,” said VAM USA President Eric Shuster in a statement. “Our rigorous commissioning and qualification process ensures the highest quality standards. The new threading plant is integrated with VAM USA’s sister company Vallourec Star’s rolling mills which enhances efficiencies and brings additional synergies that benefit our customers and further differentiates us from competition.”

The new plant manufactures connections for casing and tubing used in the oil and gas markets. Vallourec Star’s Youngstown complex produces oil country tubular goods, or OCTG, pipe for the energy markets.

Two years ago, Vallourec opened a new $1 billion pipe manufacturing plant in Youngstown to compliment its existing operations.

Last year, the city approved an incentives package consisting of a 10-year, 75% real property tax abatement that helped VAM USA invest $81.6 million to renovate the former Genmak Steel Co. site at Ohio Works. The company also purchased an additional 27 additional acres contiguous to the site from the city for $364,548.

The company has said it expects to employ 80 full-time at the plant.
