Port Authority Gets $2.1M for Airport Upgrades
VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio– The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has awarded $2.1 million to the Western Reserve Port Authority for updates and improvements at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, which the port authority operates.
The funds were made available through the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The funding is part of the FAA grant the airport has been expecting for the midfield taxiway improvements project at the airport, said Dan Dickten, director of aviation at the airport. Dickten believes the money is discretionary funding from the agency but was attempting to confirm the numbers with FAA officials when contacted by The Business Journal last night .
The funds will be used for a safety improvement project, Dickten said.
The project will remove “some confusing pavement on the airport,” provide a means for aircraft to access the south end of the main runway without first having to taxi across the passenger terminal apron, remove a 2-foot slope from the main taxiway, install much-needed safety signage and improve drainage on the airfield, he explained.
The airport is expecting an additional $3.4 million in FAA airport capital improvement program entitlement funding, he continued. The airport has been “rolling over” its annual $1 million entitlement funds for more than three years.
Dickten expressed the appreciation of the port authority and regional airport to Ryan, D-13 Ohio, and his staff for their continued support and looked forward to the announcement of the entitlement funding so the project can be completed this summer.
“This is great news for the Valley. I am proud that the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport has received this critical funding for updates and improvements,” Ryan said in his announcement.
