New Castle Fireworks Festival Set for July 10-11
NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Live entertainers, children’s and cultural activities and more will be part of the New Castle Fireworks Festival featuring Arts on the Riverwalk. The event is set for July 10 and 11, running from 4 to 10 p.m. each day at East Washington and Mill streets downtown.
The Wounded Warriors concert kicks off July 10 at 5 p.m. in the Riverwalk Amphitheater, featuring five bands until 10 p.m. Concertgoers can register to Paint the Streets with the family and enjoy The Bubble Wagon. The Living Treasures Petting Zoo will let children interact with the animals. A small fireworks display by SkyKing Fireworks will conclude the evening at 10 p.m.
July 11 will feature inflatable amusements, trackless train and an “Anything that Floats (without you in it)” competition. Kids can participate in tie dye, face-painting, chalk on the walk, beading, hat making and other imaginative activities. The event’s juggler/stiltwalker will return to delight the crowds and parade-size balloons will be posed for photo ops.
The Rubber Ducky Derby will launch at 7:30 p.m. Performing on the main stage will be the LaBra Brothers followed by the River Saints. Zambelli Internationale will shoot off its display at 10:05 p.m. followed by an after party inside the Riverplex.
Also this year, the Lawrence County Historical Society and Lawrence County Community Action Partnership have added tours of New Castle’s Historic North Hill, the third largest historic district in Pennsylvania, both days of the festival. Departures are planned at 4:30 and 6 p.m. from Mercer and North streets. A $5 donation supports the historical society, which will host its annual ice cream social at 8:30 p.m. on its front lawn overlooking the city.
Other ongoing activities during the festival include a photo booth inside the Riverplex, Kids Create Zone daily from 4 to 8 p.m., an art show at the Confluence, and a patio bar at the Commonwealth Gastropub and Brewery. And children can visit with Elsa and Olaf from Disney’s Frozen and Thor.
Also featured will be street artists and two mini stages to complement the main stage with various acts performing. New to the festival will be several selfie stations placed throughout the festival.
Handicapped parking is available on the first floor of the parking garage on Mercer Street. An event tram will be set up July 11 for easier access around the festival. Cost will be $1 per ride with three event tram pickup locations.
Coming back again this year is the free shuttle buses from Union Plaza (between Lowe’s and Sears) and also Shenango (behind First Merit and Arby’s) Signs will be placed to show locations off of Route 224 and Route 65. Buses will run 3:30 until 11:30 or until the last person is picked up.
