Number of YSU Degrees Awarded Hits 31-Year High

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of degrees awarded by Youngstown State University hit a 31-year high this past academic year, the university conferring   2,270 degrees – including 1,682 baccalaureates

“This noteworthy total is a reflection of the high enrollments that the university experienced a few years back and the hard work of our faculty and our staff in helping these students achieve success and earn their degrees,” said YSU Provost Martin Abraham in a press release.

The number of baccalaureates  awarded was also the most since the 1973-74 school year. Two undergraduate  programs at YSU, criminal justice and social work, had a record number of degrees awarded, 120 and 98 respectively.

The mechanical engineering program graduated 46 undergraduate students over the past academic year, the most in 40 years. YSU’s psychology undergraduate  program awarded 58 degrees last school year, the most in 12 years.

For masters’ degrees, the 49 degrees in the counseling program were the most since the 1985-86 school year and the 40 degrees conferred in the general business program were the most since 2003-04.

Abraham, the chief academic officer,  noted that the high number of degrees does pose a challenge to the university because the graduates must be replaced. As of the week of June 22,  1,777 incoming freshman had registered for classes this fall, a 25% increase over last year. The university’s goal is 2,200, the release said.
