6 Permits Issued to Chesapeake for Carroll County
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued six permits for new horizontal wells in the Utica shale last week – all of them to Chesapeake Exploration LLC in Carroll County.
Chesapeake is the most prolific driller in the Utica shale and Carroll County, with 493 permits for horizontal wells, according to ODNR.
There were 20 drilling rigs operating in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale the week ended July 18. Since 2011, energy companies have drilled 1,535 horizontal wells in the shale play, 925 of which are producing. A total of 1,980 permits have been issued across the play.
There were no new permits issued to drill a well in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties for the week ended July 18.
Nor were there any permits issued in the bordering western Pennsylvania counties of Mercer and Lawrence, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
