YSU to Host Internship Information Breakfast for Employers

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A breakfast for employers looking at improving their internship program will be held at Youngstown State University’s Williamson Hall Aug. 11.

The program, hosted by YSU Williamson College of Business Administration and College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, begins at 8 a.m. with a presentation from the Northeast Ohio Council Higher Education on the benefits of internships and how they can be a cost-effective way to bring talent into an organization.

Information about grants that help pay interns will also be available. Companies that fall under “key industry categories” may be eligible to receive grants that reimburse employers for student wages, YSU said in a release.

Last school year, the Williamson College of Business Administration received a $150,00 grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp., which paid for 60 students’ internships.

“This grant funding provided a tremendous opportunity to YSU students with financial need to have a paid internship,” said Laura Dewberry, grant administrator for Great Lakes, in a press release. “It also allows employers in the Mahoning Valley to host a YSU student as an intern for the first time or offer a paid internship when they were previously unable.”

Great Lakes awarded $5.2 million to 40 colleges and universities in four states for the 2014- 2015 school year. According to the release, several students who were paid through the grant were asked to take jobs, both full- and part-time, upon completion of their internship.
