Jameson Delays Closing of Behavioral Health Services

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Jameson Health System will extend “through at least Dec. 31” the operation of its behavioral health services unit at the South Campus here. The extension comes as the office of the Pennsylvania attorney general continues to review Jameson’s merger agreement with Pittsburgh-based UPMC.

Jameson’s South Campus, 100 S. Mercer St., offers 24-house emergency room crisis management, inpatient behavior health care and partial hospitalization for outpatient psychiatric services.

Jameson announced in May that it would cut operations at the South Campus, formerly St. Francis Hospital, from a 24/7 operation to a weekday daytime outpatient center (READ STORY).

Said Jameson’s president and CEO, Douglas Danko, in announcing the cutbacks, “Continued operation of the South Campus on a 24-hour basis is simply not sustainable at this time.”

The decision to extend services through the end of the year was made by Jameson’s executive board of directors.

On July 23 Jameson announced it was stop delivering babies effective Sept. 1 at its North Campus (READ STORY), 1211 Wilmington Ave. Danko cited failure to recruit physicians “during these uncertain times.”

Jameson Health System announced last Sept. 16 its intent to merge with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. At that time, officials estimated the merger would be consummated early this year.

Instead, it remains stalled by the office of the Pennsylvania attorney general as officials review how such a consolidation would impact health-care prices for residents of Lawrence and Mercer counties.
