Free CDL Training to Address Bus Driver Shortage
BOARDMAN, Ohio – The Mahoning County Educational Service Center will offer free commercial driver’s license — or CDL – training to address the shortage of substitute school bus drivers in Mahoning County.
Sports team trips and home and away schedules already have been altered because of the scarcity of drivers, which also could affect the ability of schools to conduct field trips, the educational service center said. And the countywide substitute driver shortage is part of a growing national problem, officials say.
“In Struthers, the situation is so desperate that if we lost a few drivers to the flu, our routes would run an hour late and we could have to consider using a calamity day,” said Joe Nohra, Struthers school superintendent.
The training will be provided through the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center’s Adult Education Program. It is being offered to entice individuals to apply for the part-time positions.
Once trained, the job openings are immediate for various school districts across Mahoning County. Traditionally substitute drivers have enjoyed the dependable part-time work, attracting retirees, small business owners, veterans and even stay-at-home moms and dads.
Being selected for one of the part-time positions eventually could lead to a contracted position when one opens. Those positions earn $15 to $20 per hour.
