YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – In an era where education is both a privilege and a challenge, the College Credit Plus Program at Youngstown State University makes a degree more attainable. Launched nearly a decade ago by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, this initiative allows students in grades 7 to 12 to earn high school and college credits simultaneously. At YSU, this program is transforming lives and reshaping the educational landscape, empowering young learners with invaluable skills and experiences.

One of the most compelling advantages is its affordability. Students can take college courses without the financial burden typically associated with higher education, providing an accessible pathway to advanced learning. Many local high school students have taken advantage of this opportunity, entering YSU with a substantial number of credits and the potential to save thousands on tuition. For many, this financial relief is a crucial factor in choosing the program. The chance to earn college credits while still in high school allows students to explore their academic interests without the worry of added expenses.

Moreover, College Credit Plus has proven to be a springboard for ambitious students, enabling them to graduate with both a high school diploma and a significant number of college credits and in some cases, even a college degree. This accelerates their educational journey and positions them as upperclassmen when they transition to full-time college students. In competitive job markets, this early entry can be a game-changer, especially in fields such as education and health care, where securing a position early can lead to long-term career advantages.

Relationships forged at YSU are another hallmark of the College Credit Plus experience. Students attend classes alongside their peers, fostering collaborative learning environments that encourage networking and mentorship. YSU faculty are known for their supportive approach, readily offering guidance and understanding to students. This mentorship can lead to unique opportunities, such as research assistantships or internships, further enhancing students’ résumés.

The College Credit Plus program at YSU also champions personalized learning. Students can select courses that align with their interests and career goals, diving deeper into subjects they are passionate about. This keeps them engaged and fosters a sense of ownership over their education.

Bianca Patrone, who graduated from YSU in May 2024 (before she graduated from high school), began her journey at YSU in the eighth grade and pursued a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She completed internships that provided experience and enriched her understanding of the business world.

By providing affordable access to college credits, fostering essential skills, nurturing relationships with mentors and offering personalized learning experiences, YSU empowers students to unlock their full potential. As these young learners navigate their paths with confidence, the benefits of this program will resonate throughout their academic and professional lives, paving the way for a brighter future in the Mahoning Valley and beyond.
