As Shortage Looms, Substitute Teacher Job Fair Set
CANFIELD, Ohio – Because the cold and flu season is underway and a shortage of substitute teachers looms, the Mahoning Valley Regional Council of Governments will host a substitute teacher job fair Tuesday, Jan. 19 at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.
The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Joyce Brooks Center. Recent graduates with education degrees and credentialed to teach as well as retired teachers are invited. The minimum requirement to be hired is a baccalaureate.
Eight schools and school districts are participating in the fair: Austintown, Boardman, Campbell, Canfield, Struthers, Youngstown Community School, MCCTC and the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.
The service center, a consortium of 18 schools or school districts in Mahoning County, has created a database of jobs and available substitutes for its members to use. With the unemployment dropping in the county, the pool of workers in the area has dropped, which coupled with the fact that substitute teachers are employed as-needed, translates into fewer subs available.
