Attorney to Address Journalists’ Rights at Youngstown Press Club Event
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Gunita Singh, a staff attorney with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, will discuss journalists’ rights during a Youngstown Press Club luncheon at noon Oct. 17 at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood St.
“When the press is free, everyone benefits,” Singh said in an email previewing her talk. “Regardless of which administration is in power, there is always going to be a need to hold government accountable.”
Singh said she hopes attendees leave her presentation “feeling empowered to skillfully pry loose government records that belong in the hands of the public and the press.”
The Reporters Committee is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization that provides free legal services and resources to, and on behalf of, journalists. It offers training concerning legal issues journalists may face when covering elections.
In her role at the Reporters Committee, Singh works on litigation and policy, primarily concerning state and federal freedom of information laws. She also helps reporters and news organizations with records requests.
Singh received her undergraduate degree from Boston University and her law degree from Georgetown University. Before joining the Reporters Committee, she was an attorney at the Washington, D.C.-based Property of the People, an organization dedicated to government transparency.
The cost for the luncheon is $30 for Youngstown Press Club members and $35 for nonmembers. The registration deadline is Oct. 10. Register HERE.
