Ben Carson to Speak at Grove City Commencement

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Former Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson will be the commencement speaker at Grove City College’s commencement ceremony Saturday morning.

“Dr. Carson’s story of his journey from extreme poverty to becoming one of America’s leading physicians will certainly inspire our students,” said Grove City College President Paul McNulty in a statement. “His address, ‘The Power of Knowledge,’ promises to resonate with nearly 600 students who will be celebrating their own achievements.”

The commencement ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the campus Quad or, in the event of extreme weather, the Physical Learning Center Arena.

Carson is an emeritus professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He was director of the pediatric neurosurgery center at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for 29 years.

Carson was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008, the NAACP’s Springharn Medal – the association’s highest honor – in 2006 and was named among of the country’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists by CNN and Time Magazine. Two of Carson’s books, “America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great” and “One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America’s Future,” have made The New York Times best seller list.

Michael S. Horton, professor of systematic theology and apologetics at Westminster Seminary California in Escondido, Calif., will be the speaker for the baccalaureate commencement, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday.

A live online stream of both ceremonies will be available at GCC.edu/livestream.
