Boardman Swim Coach to Be Inducted into Hall of Fame
BOARDMAN, Ohio — Longtime Boardman swim coach Terry O’Halloran will be inducted Sunday into the Ohio High School State Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame. O’Halloran is one of four inductees this year, and the only coach from the Mahoning Valley.
O’Halloran, who still resides in Boardman, started the Spartan Swim Team at Boardman High School in 1985, and coached hundreds of young men and women until his retirement as coach in 2018.
“Terry set the precedent on guiding student athletes to be the best at their sport as well as the best in the classroom,” says Spartan swim coach Carlo Cordon. “Boardman’s swim program continues to focus on strength of character overall.”
O’Halloran’s teams won 597 dual meets, captured one Federal League team title, three Northeast Aquatic Conference team titles, and eight AAC team titles. He has produced four state champions, 18 All-Americans, 74 Academic All-Americans and 88 Ohio state swimming qualifiers. His numerous coaching awards include the Neil Skinner Award for Ohio High School Division 1 Boys Coach of the year in 2018.
O’Halloran is known as a guiding force for young swimmers in the Mahoning Valley. In addition to Boardman High School, he coached and managed teams at the Boardman Tennis and Swim Club and the Youngstown YMCA.
He taught fourth grade for 38 years at Stadium Drive Elementary School and retired from teaching in 2012.
