Butter Maid Owner Buys Carney McNicholas Warehouse
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – An entity incorporated by the owner of Butter Maid Bakery in Boardman has purchased the former Carney McNicholas warehouse at 100 Victoria Road in the Victoria Road Industrial Park here.
The entity, DNNJ3 LLC, paid $1.05 million for the 30,150-square-foot, one-story industrial warehouse built in 1974. The sale closed June 8. DNNJ3 LLC was incorporated in September 2018 by Jeff Naumoff as a holding company for Butter Maid Bakery, according to the corporation’s agent, attorney Anthony Siciliano.
The seller is the Gregory Carney Trust Agreement. Greg Carney says he and his brother, T.J. Carney, jointly operated Carney McNicholas “until I sold to my brother three years ago and he relocated the company to Trumbull County.”
The warehouse at 100 Victoria Road was subsequently leased back to T.J. Carney’s operation, which specializes in moving libraries and fine art objects.
“They didn’t need that much warehouse space so I put it back on the market,” Greg Carney says.
Naumoff is the fourth-generation co-owner of his family-owned business, founded in 1955 and one of the longest-running businesses along the U.S. Route 224 corridor in Boardman. The company, which previously operated as Steelton Bakery on Steel Street in Youngstown, traces it roots to 1903 and horse-drawn delivery wagons.
Interestingly, Carney McNicholas traces its roots to 1906, when patriarch J.V. McNicholas used a horse and buggy to haul travelers’ baggage from the city’s railroad stations.
At its current site, 425 Boardman-Canfield Road, Butter Maid Bakery turns out thousands kolachi rolls for sale at the store and for shipment across the United States. Revenue has grown substantially since the company launched its e-commerce business.
“Kolachi is 80% of our business. We are now making 17 flavors,” Naumoff told The Business Journal in 2016.
Naumoff did not return telephone and email requests for comment about DNNJ3’s purchase of the Carney McNicholas warehouse.
Siciliano says the bakery is considering an expansion of operations at the site but there is no set timetable.
