Car Sales Rise 3% in Mahoning Valley

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – New and used car sales in the Mahoning Valley climbed 3.4% last month as 5,329 vehicles were sold in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association show.

New car sales totaled 2,931 in March, a 3.4% increase, while used the association reported 2,338 used vehicles were sold, a 3.3% rise.

For new vehicle sales, Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, topped the charts with 218 sold, up from 149 in the same period last year, followed by Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, with 213; Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, 150; Taylor Kia, Boardman, 133; and Stadium GM Superstore, Salem, 122.

The top five new models in the Mahoning Valley were all manufactured by General Motors and Ford, led once again by GM’s Chevy Equinox, of which 224 left showrooms in March. Following were the Chevy Silverado with 201, the Lordstown-built Chevy Cruze with 164, the Chevy Malibu with 162 and the Ford Escape with 100.

All of the top five showed a double-digit increase from March 2015 except for the top-selling Equinox, which was down 104 units from last year, and the fifth-place Escape, down 22. Sales of the Cruze rose 33 units from last March.

Greenwood Chevrolet led the Valley in used car sales with 139 vehicles sold. The top-selling used vehicle in the area was the Chevy Cruze, of which 114 were sold, 40 more than the same period last year.
