Carols & Cocoa Will Return to Stambaugh Auditorium

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The annual Carols & Cocoa event and concert, a holiday tradition in the area, will return after being canceled last year because of the pandemic.

It will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at Stambaugh Auditorium. 

Carols and Cocoa is one of three holiday events to be presented by the Cliffe College of Creative Arts at Youngstown State University. The college will also host “A Musical Theatre Cabaret” on Dec. 10 and “Horns a Carolin’” on Dec. 11.

Carols & Cocoa will begin in Stambaugh’s ballroom with seasonal favorites performed by various YSU music and choral ensembles and featuring an audience sing-along. At intermission, cocoa provided by Stambaugh Auditorium will be available in the upper lobby before the start of the second concert.

The Dana Holiday Concert will take place in the Stambaugh concert auditorium with music performed by the Dana Symphony Orchestra, Brass Quintet, Jazz Ensemble, Dana Symphony Orchestra Brass and Dana Symphony Orchestra Strings, Dana Symphony Orchestra and the Festival Symphonic Choir.

The program includes well-known holiday selections and features Vivaldi’s “Gloria” with soloists Brianne Samson, soprano I, Sharon, Pa., and Marlina Karimi, soprano II, West Palm Beach, Fla.

Kathryn Davison Miller will close the concert with an organ postlude of “Vom Himmel Hoch (Toccata-Prelude IV)” by Garth Edmundson.

The Avonworth, Pa., High School Chamber Singers, the Lakeview High School Madrigal Singers, and the Stambaugh Chorus are guest performers.

Ticket sales are limited to 500. Patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at StambaughAuditorium.com, in person at the box office or by phone at 330 259 0555. Tickets are $10 ($9 for students from other schools and senior citizens; free for children under 12 and those with a valid YSU ID).

ADDITIONAL EVENTS

In addition to Carols & Cocoa, YSU will present two other holiday events.

“The Most Wonderful Time of the Year Musical Theatre Cabaret” will take place at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the B&O Station Banquet Hall, 530 Mahoning Ave. Sponsored by the YSU visual and dramatic arts department, the event will include jazz, country and Delta blues holiday themed music.

Nearly 30 songs will be sung by students in the musical theater program. 

All tickets, including seniors, children and YSU, are $25 for general admission seats and can be purchased in advance at YSU.edu/theatertickets. Limited tickets might be available at the door but must be purchased by cash or check.

The event will include a pub menu and  beverages will be available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the YSU musical theater program.

“Horns A Carolin’” will take place at 1 p.m. Dec. 11 at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Youngstown, 323 Wick Ave. Presented by the Dana School of Music, the program is free and open to the public.

Horn players of all levels are invited to bring their instruments to perform a selection of traditional seasonal tunes in a casual atmosphere with the students in Professor Sean Yancer’s horn studio. No reservation is needed.
