Cassie Nespor on the History and Future of the Melnick Museum
The Melnick Medical Museum was originally housed inside a building on Wick Ave. Now, eight years after moving out of that space, the museum has a new home inside Cushwa Hall’s Bitonte College of Health and Human Services on the campus of Youngstown State University.
The Museum was started in 2000 by Dr. John Melnick, a local doctor and head of the radiology department at the Youngstown Hospital Association hospitals, says curator Cassie Nespor.
“This new space in Cushwa Hall allows me to bring out the larger items that haven’t been able to be show for the last eight years,” she says. “We’ve set up the office recreations that were kind of the center of the museum when it was on Wick Avenue. I’ve also set up some of the X-ray machines which I feel is a core exhibit because of Dr. Melnick’s specialty in radiology.”
