Community Foundation Urges Students to Apply for Scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – With the increasing price of higher education, the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is encouraging parents and students to explore scholarship opportunities, including those available through the foundation.

Among the organizations offering scholarships through the Community Foundation are the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation, the Women’s Board of Youngstown and First Place Community Foundation.

“Students and parents are very fortunate that here in the Valley we have generous donors who have set up education funds for local residents,” said foundation President Shari Harrell. “None of these offer full scholarships, but all of them provide some level of assistance. They are all worth exploring.”

Students who graduated in 2015 averaged $35,000 in student loan debt, more than double what graduates 20 years ago had, Harrell noted, and 71% who graduated with a baccalaureate have debt.

A full list of scholarships can be found on the foundation website, cfmv.org, under the grants and scholarships tab. The deadline for most scholarships is March 1.
