Conservation Districts Name Moran Teacher of Year
Heather Moran, who teaches advanced biology at Boardman High School, this week was awarded “Teacher of the Year” by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
The award was presented Tuesday at in Columbus during the organization’s annual statewide convention.
Moran has been teaching science at Boardman Local Schools for 18 years and has served as adviser and coach to BHS Envirothon Club for nearly a decade. This past summer, she escorted a group of 17 Boardman High students on a trip to Iceland. Their adventures included navigating the glacier named Solheimajokull and diving between diverging tectonic plates.
The Mahoning County Soil and Water District nominated Moran, calling her an “enthusiastic” teacher who shows her students a diverse selection of environmental issues such as water quality, how to sustainably feed people, wildlife management and forestry. Her students’ most recent accomplishment was earning first place at the 2019 Annual Northeast Ohio Area 2 Envirothon Competition.
“Out of 88 counties, and the numerous schools within those counties that the soil and water conservation districts work with, Ms. Moran was singled out as the teacher of the year,” says Kathleen Marie Vrable Bryan, district administrator of Mahoning SWCD. “She devotes herself to make sure her students fully understand and appreciate our environment.”
