Contract OK’d for Downtown Youngstown Vault Work
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The city will pay $433,652.20 for a Columbus company to address underground storage vaults attached to buildings on East and West Federal Street discovered during the $27.65 million Smart2 Network project.
Guardian Fence and Construction LLC, doing business as Geo Specialties, was awarded the contract for the work by the city’s Board of Control during its meeting Thursday morning. The company’s bid, which included a base bid of $285,477.20 and four alternate bid packages totaling $158,175, was the lowest of the three bids submitted for the work.
The other two bidders were Murphy Contracting Co. and Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Co.
The work involving the vaults should be completed by mid-May, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of public works.
In addition, Shasho said in a news release just after noon Thursday that East Federal Street between South Champion and Market streets would be closed beginning Monday for roadway improvements associated with the Smart2 – or Strategic & Sustainable, Medical & Manufacturing, Academic & Arts, Residential & Recreational, Technology & Training – Network project.
Funded in part by a $10.85 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant awarded in 2018, the Smart2 initiative is intended to upgrade and make safety improvements to several downtown streets, as well as to make them more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly.
“We have two more blocks to do, basically,” Shasho said. “We expect to have it wrapped up probably around August.” The work starting Monday is not directly tied to the vault work, which he said was all interior work.
The Board of Control also approved a $41,200 contract with A Neider Architecture LLC, Canfield, for architectural design services and preparation of bid documents for a proposed renovation of the second floor of City Hall to accommodate a relocation of the city’s department of community planning and economic development.
Shasho said he would like it to go out for bids before City Council takes its summer recess.
