Coronavirus Case Update: May 8, 2020

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Health, as well as county health districts in the Mahoning Valley, reported 23,016 total cases of COVID-19. The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 54,238 total cases.

In Mahoning County, the ODH reports 1,087 cases, with 257 hospitalizations and 119 deaths. Mahoning County is third in the state for deaths and seventh in the state for the number of confirmed cases.

The ODH reported 392 cases in Trumbull County with 126 hospitalizations and 36 deaths. In Columbiana County, the ODH reports 313 positive cases, 113 hospitalizations and 33 deaths.

Of the total cases reported by ODH, 21,969 are confirmed. It reported 1,047 probable cases based on the CDC’s recently expanded case definition. There have been 4,218 hospitalizations and 1,188 patients in the intensive care unit. There have been 1,306 total deaths, which breaks down to 1,185 confirmed deaths and another 121 “probable” deaths under the CDC expanded diagnosis definition. The median age of those testing positive is 51.

Among those testing positive, 3,566 (15%) were health care workers. To date, Ohio has conducted 183,269 tests.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports 54,238 total cases, with 2,702 hospitalizations with 507 COVID-19 patients on ventilators. Since March 6, there have been 3,616 deaths in Pennsylvania.

Of all tests conducted in Pennsylvania, 216,231 were reported negative.

According to the department’s hospital preparedness dashboard, 1,443 of the commonwealth’s ventilators are being used by COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients.

Mercer County has 70 total cases and two death with 900 negative tests, while Lawrence County has 69 total cases, seven deaths and 873 negative tests.

Mercer County has 42 ventilators available, as well as 22 adult ICU beds, 242 medical/surgical beds, zero pediatric ICU beds and 41 airborne isolation room beds available. Lawrence County has 24 ventilators available, along with five adult ICU beds, zero pediatric ICU beds, 48 medical/surgical beds and one airborne isolation room bed.
