COVID-Related Hospitalizations in Ohio Steadily Decline
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Health reports 4,262 new cases of COVID-19 in the state Tuesday, bringing the cumulative total during the pandemic to 872,918.
There were also 295 new hospitalizations for a cumulative total of 45,276. Currently, there are 2,964 patients hospitalized in Ohio for COVID-19. That’s down from 3,909 patients hospitalized about two weeks ago. Of the current patients, 741 are in the ICU, which is down from 959 about two weeks ago, and 486 are on a ventilator, down from 636.
In Region 5, which includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, there are 530 patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 727 nearly two weeks ago. Of those hospitalized, 113 are in ICU, down from 157 on Jan. 13, and 70 are on a ventilator, down from 102.
Since the start of the pandemic, 6,600 Ohioans have been admitted to ICU because of COVID-19. COVID-related deaths in Ohio totaled 10,856 Tuesday, up 88 from yesterday.
As of Jan. 26, there have been 656,474 vaccinations administered in Ohio, or 5.62% of the state’s population.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports 4,628 new cases, bringing the state’s total to 812,495 COVID-19 cases, as well as 20,883 deaths, up 219 from the day before.
In Mahoning County, the ODH reports 17,561 cases Tuesday, up 90 from yesterday, with 844 hospitalizations, up one, and 339 deaths. There have been 14,066 vaccine doses administered, or 6.15% of the county’s population.
The ODH reports 12,980 cases in Trumbull County, up 60 from Monday, with 928 hospitalizations, up four, and 317 deaths. There have been 8,815 vaccinations administered in the county, or 4.45% of the total population.
In Columbiana County, the ODH reports 7,433 positive cases as of Tuesday, up 24, along with 442 hospitalizations, up two, and 124 deaths. There have been 4,949 vaccinations in the county, or 4.45% of the population.
Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties are rated Red in the state’s color-coded Public Health Advisory System, indicating very high exposure and spread. All 88 counties in the state are at least Orange level, indicating increased exposure and spread, with Hamilton County being the only rated Purple, the highest level of spread.
Of the total cases reported by Ohio Department of Health, 763,650 are confirmed. ODH reported 109,268 probable cases based on the CDC’s expanded case definition. Of the 10,856 total deaths, 9,678 are confirmed and another 1,178 are probable under the CDC expanded diagnosis definition. The 21-day reported case average is 6,567.
The ODH also reports a cumulative 45,276 hospitalizations, of which 6,600 are intensive care admissions, including 40 in the last 24 hours.
The state reports a presumed 748,132 Ohioans have recovered after testing positive. Presumed recovered is defined as cases with a symptom onset date of greater than 21 days prior who are not deceased, according to the ODH website.

In Pennsylvania, 714,243 of the cases in the commonwealth are confirmed, according to the state’s Department of Health, and 98,252 are probable. There are currently 3,790 patients hospitalized, including 760 in the ICU. There are 436 are on a ventilator.
Pennsylvania also reports 20,883 total deaths.
Of all tests conducted in Pennsylvania, 3,579,851 were reported negative, the department reported Tuesday. With positive cases, 79% have recovered. If a case has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of their first positive test or onset of symptoms, then the person is considered recovered, according to the health department’s website.
The health department reported Mercer County has 7,324 cases as of Tuesday, up 30 from the day before, and 215 deaths, up two, along with 24,520 negative tests. Lawrence County has 5,344 total cases, up 18 from Monday, and 161 deaths, as well as 16,407 negative tests.
Statewide, 473,449 partial vaccines have been administered and 132,184 full. In Mercer County, 4,571 partial vaccines and 1,069 full vaccines have been administered, along with 2,376 partial and 688 full vaccines in Lawrence County.
