Documentary About Vindicator’s Closing Premieres
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – “Newstown,” a documentary film about the closing of The Vindicator and the community’s reaction to it, is now available to view.
It can be watched for free at LocalNewsInitiative.northwestern.edu.
The 52-minute documentary was made by Youngstown native and Northwestern University professor Craig Weldon Duff. “Newstown” gives an overview of the remaining media outlets’ efforts to fill the void left by The Vindicator, including The Business Journal, The (Warren) Tribune-Chronicle’s Vindicator edition and WKBN. It also touches on the launch of Mahoning Matters, a collaboration between Google and McClatchy newspapers.
The Vindicator closed on Aug. 30, 2019, just two months after marking its 150th anniversary. More than 140 employees lost their jobs.
Duff, an Emmy award winner, leads the graduate journalism video and broadcast specialization at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications. His documentary was made in conjunction with the Medill Local News Initiative, a project to help local news outlets become more financially sustainable.
