Dorbish Earns Standout School Principal Award

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Austintown Elementary Principal Cathy Dorbish learned Thursday, during a virtual awards ceremony, that she received the Amplify Science of Reading Standout School Principal Award.

The award recognizes her leadership in the implementation of a new reading curriculum at the elementary building. Out of 300 nominations throughout the country, Dorbish was one of three finalists selected.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Science of Reading Standout School Principal Award,” says Dorbish. “When I came to be principal at [Austintown Elementary] three years ago, we took the first step and started learning what the science of reading is. Three years into this new way of teaching, we still feel like we have just begun our journey of learning. We are now implementing the strategies based on the Science of Reading research. And I am excited to tell you that even in these early stages, we are seeing positive results in our students’ reading success.”

The curriculum, Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts, is designed for elementary age students. It combines rich, diverse content knowledge in history, science, literature and the arts with systematic, research-based foundational skills instruction.
