YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The average person can suspend themselves by grip strength alone for about 40 seconds. However, sloths are able to hang almost indefinitely. In fact, sloths grip strength is so great that if you were to shake hands with a sloth the sloth would crush your hand.
In this Excellence at Work video, Dr. Michael Butcher, professor of biological studies at Youngstown State University, discusses his anatomical studies on the sloth, and how it’s able to accomplish such feats of strength.
