Eastern Gateway Secures Teach-out Agreements with 10 Institutions

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Eastern Gateway Community College has formally entered into teach-out partnerships with 10 two- and four-year colleges and universities to ensure students can continue to pursue their degrees.

No teach-out agreement has been reached with Youngstown State University, however. A news release from Eastern Gateway says those conversations continue.

Eastern Gateway awaits approval from the Higher Learning Commission to enter into teach-out partnerships with another school.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission have also given Eastern Gateway permission to offer a limited number of courses in the summer for some students who need just one more class to graduate.

“We have always put our students first at Eastern Gateway, and these [teach-out] partnerships will allow our students to move from our college to other schools so they can pursue their degree in higher education uninterrupted and with minimal disruption,” interim President John Crooks said in a news release. “The 10 approved schools and one pending will offer our students choices and the chance for a smooth transition.”

Teach-out agreements are formal arrangements made between academic institutions when one institution decides to discontinue a course or to close. The primary goal is to ensure students can continue their education with minimal disruption.

“We are also pleased to have been given approval to offer a limited number of courses at Eastern Gateway this summer so some students, who may be one course shy of graduating, finish their degree,” Crooks said in the release. “We will be announcing the courses that will be available at the Steubenville and Youngstown campuses sometime next week.”

The Higher Learning Commission has approved the following schools for teach-out partnerships with Eastern Gateway:

  • Austin Community College, Texas.
  • Belmont College, Ohio.
  • Cuyahoga Community College, Ohio.
  • Franklin University, Ohio.
  • Hocking College, Ohio.
  • Kent State University, Ohio.
  • Owens Community College, Ohio.
  • Stark State College, Ohio.
  • Washington State College of Ohio.
  • Westmoreland County Community College, Pa.

A teach-out partnership with Lorain Community College is pending Higher Learning Commission approval.

Conversations to secure teach-out agreements continue with Columbus State Community College and West Virginia Northern Community College, as well as YSU.
