Eastern Gateway to Work on Semiconductor Technician Pipeline

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Eastern Gateway Community College will provide programming as part of an initiative to build a technician pipeline for the semiconductor industry.

Eastern Gateway, which has campuses in Steubenville and Youngstown, is among the institutions that will participate in the Intel Ohio Semiconductor Collaboration Network, the community college said. As part of the Artificial Intelligence Incubator Network, it will provide workforce and career accelerator training courses as a gateway to in-demand fields

Intel, which last week broke ground on a $20 billion semiconductor manufacturing complex near Columbus, is committing $17.7 million over the next three years to Ohio’s colleges and universities to ensure there are enough workers to staff the plant over the next decade.

The funding is intended to help bridge semiconductor manufacturing workforce shortages and technical challenges to develop new capabilities emphasizing chip-making.

“The American Association of Community Colleges brought together community colleges from across the country to build this network of institutions focused on Artificial Intelligence development,” said Arthur Daly, Eastern Gateway senior vice and chief development officer. “Training in AI will be heavily technical-based and cover social and career growth skills to create career pathways for students.”

Eastern Gateway is working with partnering community colleges and Intel and Dell Technologies to provide local and regional students training and job opportunities. With guidance from Dell, it will develop AI labs with in-person, online or hybrid options, Daly said. Dell also will work with Eastern Gateway on career skills and employability for AI-related careers.
