Excellence at Work | Dr. Feng ‘George’ Yu
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — In this episode of “Excellence at Work,” Youngstown State University associate professor of computer science and information systems, Dr. Feng “George” Yu, discusses his work on query estimation.
“We found out the traditional sampling method cannot work on this problem,” says Yu.
In 2019 Yu and one of his master students, who graduated from YSU in fall 2018, published a paper, “Scalable Correlated Sampling for Join Query Estimations on Big Data,” which won the best paper award at the peer-reviewed 28th International Conference on Software Engineering and Data Engineering in San Diego.
“So now, for example, if we have 100Gb of data and we run a regional query,” he explains.
“The regional query runs for two minutes. When I use my method it’s less than two seconds.”
