Fire at Ellwood Castings Contained within Hour
HUBBARD, Ohio – Crews were called in to contain a fire at Ellwood Engineered Castings in Hubbard Wednesday morning.
Ellwood Engineered Castings is a division of Ellwood Group Inc., based in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. The Hubbard foundry produces gray and ductile castings ranging from one to 60 tons. According to the company’s website, it is the largest supplier of ingot molds in North America.
Liberty Fire Department Chief Gus Birch said firefighters were called after a mold at the plant flipped over, igniting an area stocked with wooden pallets.
A representative from the company said damage was minimal.
The fire broke out around 6:45 a.m., he told WKBN, and multiple departments – including those from Hubbard, Brookfield and Youngstown Air Reserve Station – were called to the scene to provide extra water and support due to intense heat. One Ellwood employee was treated at the scene for breathing problems and the fire was contained within an hour.
