Flashback Minis: Brigadier General Samuel Emerson Opdycke

WARREN, Ohio– Brigadier General Samuel Emerson Opdycke was born in Hubbard, Ohio in 1830. He served during the Civil War after settling in Warren. He enlisted in 1861.

Opdycke discovered he had a knack for military routines which helped him to quickly rise through the ranks, receiving a promotion to Captain in 1862. Unfortunately, he would resign his commission after being wounded in the Battle of Shiloh.

However, this would not end his military career. Opdycke would go on to recruit for the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, also know as, Opdycke’s Tigers. Soon after in 1865, he would receive the title of Brigadier General.
