Flashback Minis: Dr. Henry Manning’s Day Book
Dr. Henry Manning was the second doctor to settle in Youngstown. He came to the area from Connecticut in 1911. For his medical practice, he kept a ledger filled with records of patients he visited, what took place, and the charges down the right side of the page.
Not only was Manning a doctor, he also operated the first drug store in Youngstown and was one of the largest land holders in the county. Most of the money he earned came from his farm, livestock and tenants.
Inside Dr. Manning’s day book, records show his patients would often pay him for his medical services with produce or by working on his farm. For example, one entry scribbled at the bottom of one of many pages says Manning received three bushels of potatoes in return for his services.
