YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Decorative Christmas villages, also known at Putz scenes, were usually placed around the base of a Christmas tree. In the 1890s, stores sold buildings of printed cardboard, like the ones in this video, along with moss, trees and fencing to construct a complete village.

“Memories of Christmas Past” at the Arms Family Museum is open through Dec. 31. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Special Twilight Thursday hours are from noon to 7 p.m.
