Flashback Minis: The Rock on the Campus of YSU
The Rock has been a part of the Youngstown State University campus since 1966. The idea behind the rock was to have it serve as a place for students to unite and gather.
However, it would not receive it’s very first coat of paint until 1967 when student reporter Ben Hayek would write an article in the Jambar about how the rock was being ignored from campus life. The rock has now been consistently painted for more than 50 years.
The rock would be moved twice in it’s lifetime on campus. It originally sat in Kilcawley Center’s courtyard next to the fountain. In 1975 is was moved to the building’s south-center side. In 2006 it was moved once again to the south east side of Kilcawley Center.
