Flashback Minis: The Squirrel Hunters Discharge Papers
These two aged documents are an honorable discharge and certificate issued by Governor David Tod to Trumbull County man John Stevenson in 1862. The honorable discharge was also issued to about 15,000 other men in Ohio. These 15,000 men were known as the Squirrel Hunters and helped to defend Cincinnati during the Civil War.
When Confederate troops took Lexington, Kentucky, it was feared that Cincinnati would be next. Gov. Tod ordered that all available men should report to duty to defend the city.
One year later, the men of the Squirrel Hunters would receive honorable discharges for their services to Ohio.
