Former Siemens USA President Named YSU National/Global Trustee

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees has appointed Poland native and former Siemens USA President Eric Spiegel as the university’s first national/global trustee.

“Mr. Spiegel has more than 35 years of experience successfully leading complex global organizations,” said YSU President Jim Tressel in a release. “We look forward to his insight, perspective and vision as we continue our work to ensure the success of our students.”

In December, trustees amended its bylaws to create the position. National/global trustees are appointed by the board based on “success in their field, state or national prominence ability to advocate for higher education and their ability to offer advice” to the trustee and president. They serve three-year terms and do not have voting privileges.

“We are thrilled to have Mr. Spiegel bring his unique skills, expertise and many years of experience to our board and YSU,” said Dee Crawford, chairwoman of the board of trustees. “We look forward to working with him on behalf of YSU, our students and the greater Youngstown community.”

A native of Poland and graduate of Poland Seminary High School, Spiegel served as president of Siemens USA, the largest subsidiary of electronics and electrical engineering conglomerate Siemens AG, from January 2010 to December 2016. Prior to that, he spent 23 years at Booz Allen Hamiltion and Booz & Co., an energy and chemicals company.

In 2013, he announced a $440 million in-kind grant for YSU’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to support lifecycle management software and training from Siemens employees. In May 2015, he was presented with an honorary doctorate from the Williamson College of Business Administration and was a speaker at the commencement ceremony.
