Four Permits Issued in Ohio’s Utica Shale
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued four new permits for horizontal oil and gas wells in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale during the week ended Jan. 20, the agency reports.
Two permits were issued to Chesapeake Exploration LLC for wells in Harrison County, ODNR reported. Ascent Utica Resources LLC received a single permit for a new well in Jefferson County, while Gulfport Energy was awarded one permit to drill a new well in Monroe County.
ODNR said there were 23 rigs operating in the Utica as of Jan. 20.
To date, energy companies have secured a total of 2,744 permits in the Utica for horizontal wells. These companies have drilled a total of 2,224 wells, of which 1,802 are in production.
There were no new permits issued in the northern sector of the Utica, which encompasses Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Nor were there new permits issued for neighboring Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
