Frackfree Seeks Answers about Injection Well ‘Geyser’
COITSVILLE, Ohio — Frackfree Mahoning Valley plans to stage a prayer service and vigil today at noon near the Collins No. 6 injection well at 4555 McCartney Road .
The anti-fracking group says it’s concerned that a “30-foot geyser” was witnessed being released by the well June 24 (above photo provided by activists) at the same time that industrial activity is taking place at the site.
In announcing today’s protest, Frackfree noted the well, the site of a previous brine spill, is just under three miles from the Khalil No. 3 injection well, which is prohibited from operating because of its proximity to the Northstar No. 1 well that triggered a series of tremors in 2011 including the 4.0 magnitude earthquake on New Year’s Eve.
The group says Coitsville Township trustees and the public deserve to hear from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, particularly trustees’ request for a meeting about the well.
“The public has a right to know what is going on in their own neighborhoods and to keep themselves and their drinking water, air, and land safe, yet it appears as though ODNR is not being upfront and responding to the trustees or the public in a timely or effective manner,” Frackfree states in its press advisory. “That is unacceptable and a serious lack of transparency by ODNR.”
