Funny Farm Comedy Club Puts Down Roots at New Location

NILES, Ohio – The Funny Farm Comedy Club has bounced around over the past decade, presenting shows in quite a few locations.

But it is putting down roots at its current location at 1201 Youngstown Road, on the lower level of Margarita King Tacos & Tequila.

Dave Robich, owner and operator of the club, loves the location on The Strip, which opened in March. It’s in the middle of the Mahoning Valley and close to everything, he said.

In the past, Robich would routinely have shows at two different locations each weekend, one on Friday and the other on Saturday.

Having only one location means he can focus on building his audience.

One of his prior spots was at Riser’s on the Links in Columbiana. “I reached a new audience, but I would have to get there hours and hours before each show to set up the room and then stay after the show to tear it down,” Robich said.

None of that is necessary at the new location because everything remains permanently in place and ready for the next show, including seating, sound and lighting equipment and the stage.

The new spot has a capacity of 84 but can be expanded by about 20 for more popular acts. High top tables line the rear wall, with lower tables in the part of the room that is closer to the stage.

Robich partners with Margarita King in the endeavor, with the Mexican restaurant maintaining operation of alcohol sales.

The new location is proving popular with patrons and the talent.

Dan Smith, a Youngstown-based comedian, has performed many times at past Funny Farm locations and at clubs throughout the state. He’s a fan of the new Funny Farm, which has an atmosphere that is warm and intimate.

“I love it,” Smith said. “You feel everybody’s vibe, and it’s easier to get your jokes across. One person laughs on this side of the room, and then everybody laughs. It goes across the room.”

Smith also likes the acoustics in the room. “The laughter resonates,” he said.

With the new location secured, Robich will work to expand his offerings beyond the usual Friday and Saturday night shows, having events with lower admission prices.

He has launched open mic nights on Wednesdays and is working on adding special event shows – such as comedy and bingo nights – on Thursdays.

The Funny Farm was founded 34 years ago, with its earliest years at the old Holiday Inn Metroplex in Liberty. The club books touring comedians from the region and beyond.

Nicky Smigs will be the featured comedian this weekend, with performances at 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $22.50 and can be purchased at FunnyFarmComedyClub.com. The club’s full schedule is also available on the site.
