Girard Seeks Comments on Leatherworks Plan

GIRARD, Ohio – A 30-day review period is under way for the public to comment on plans to remediate the former Girard leatherworks site.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last year awarded the city grant funds to remediate the brownfield site, 1052 N. State St. The 11.8-acre cleanup site was formerly a leather processing operation where animal hides were tanned, dyed, and tempered with chemicals to make them softer and more pliable.

Available for review on the city’s website is an analysis of brownfield cleanup alternatives and remedial action plan. Updates about progress of work at the site will be announced at regularly scheduled City Council meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of the month.

The city will receive comments for a 30-day period through June 30.  Comments can be directed to Mayor James Melfi, Mayor, who may be contacted at: Girard City Administration Building, 100 W. Main St. SE, Girard, Ohio 44420, 330-545-3879 or [email protected].
